Matthew Corrin: The Techie Who Succeeded in Opening a Restaurant
If you have not heard about Freshii then you may as well have not heard about Matthew Corrin. This man's story is quite unique. He succeeded in an area where he did not really have any specialization on but was highly motivated by the idea that inspired him to do it. His story illustrates how passion can be a very important ingredient in the success of an individual even if he does not have the skills to perform a task. He can be considered as one of the best role models that young individuals can learn from today.
Background and Early Life
Corrin was a former public relations officer for Oscar de la Renta, which is a very huge name in the fashion industry. So you might be thinking, why would anyone give up this dream job to start a restaurant? Especially given the background that he had; Corrin specialized in technology. Well his idea started out while he was employed under the fashion designer and there he saw the need and the idea of creating a chain store that serves only the freshest and healthiest food available.
He began to plan about this food chain store which he envisioned to be like Starbucks to coffee. He opened the first ever Freshii, which is what he called the restaurant, in Toronto. He chose this location due to the number of people that he knew there and also due to the similarity of the environment to what he had formerly worked on. Corrin had zero experience in handling a restaurant and he also never expected the problems that were coming his way.
Based on this experience, he learned that it is not only skills and resources that make an undertaking successful. It also takes hard work and dedication in order to get something going.
During the opening of his restaurant in Toronto, half of his workers walked out due to the great demand that came from his customers. It was in January and since people were health conscious due to the recent holidays, and they were too eager to find out what Freshii had to offer. Aside from that, his cook also had an accident which meant that he had to take care of the food preparation as well aside from serving as waiter and cashier at the same time.
Based on this experience, he learned that it is not only skills and resources that make an undertaking successful. It also takes hard work and dedication in order to get something going. With his persistence and dedication, Corrin was able to open more than 60 stores and is still growing. Today, the restaurant has branches not only in Canada but in the US as well.
Corrin sought out people and corporations who were willing to invest in his business and was then able to move to the US to help start a series of branches. Today, he is planning to sprea d his restaurant across the globe and give everyone the chance to experience fresh food at its best. Currently, he has opened up branches in Austria, the US, and the Middle East. He employs management strategies on a store level which means that there is no centralized decision-making structure for his stores. He also emphasizes the idea of being passionate for your work in order to succeed.
