Network Solutions Website Hosting Review
Network Solutions was initially founded in 1979 as a consulting company but had expanded its services to selling domain names in the 90's. It had been managed by different companies until now, when it was purchased by Web.com. The initial target market of Network solutions were individuals and small business but it now offers VPS hosting as well. The company now offers email hosting, shared web hosting, WordPress hosting, even reseller hosting although this is being offered through a sister company.
The company offers a 99.99% uptime guarantee for their clients and some have even gone on to say that they had 100% uptime for a month.
Network Solutions offers different features depending on your subscription plan. For WordPress Hosting, you get the WordPress 3.5.1 platform, 10 email boxes, an email address, 50 GB disk space, 500 GB monthly data transfer, web statistics and reporting, one free domain, and 5 domain pointers. Take note that the free domain only lasts as long as the initial subscription period.
They also offer an e-commerce package which is suitable for those who would like to open an online store. It features free set up, 25 to 100,000 products; 5 to 100 email boxes, advanced inventory and bulk management tools for a premium subscription, mobile store, free domain name, and add-a-store. They do have transaction fees however, which can range from o.75% to 1.25%.
Their shared web hosting services come in different packages: web hosting, web hosting & marketing, and hosting plus marketing and store. The basic package has a website builder, FTP, unlimited bandwidth, 300 GB disk space, and various tools such as Drupal, Joomla, PHP, etc. The marketing features include search engine listing while store features include creating and offering promos, credit card payments, and selling products.
Their Advanced Web Hosting packages offer from 300GB to unlimited disk space, unlimited data transfer, free domain, 100 domain pointers, 3 to 10 directory pointers, 1000 to an unlimited number of email boxes, 1 GB email storage, catch-all email address, 1 auto-responder, and 3 email aliases. You also get 25 to unlimited FTP accounts and AWStats for both UNIX and Windows. They also have MS Access, MS SQL, phpMyAdmin, and Cold Fusion 10.0.
Their VPS hosting is offered in two packages: essential and professional. The company offers no set up fees, 512 MB RAM, 10 to 50 GB disk space, 500 to 2000 monthly data transfer, a dedicated IP address, Plesk control panel, CentOS, free domain name, 5o to 200 email boxes, 10 to 100 managed domains, technical support and Parallels Deluxe software.
Network Solutions offers lower rates for longer subscription periods which can last as long as 10 years. They also offer lower initial subscription rates just like other web hosting companies which will revert to higher prices once it has expired. For WordPress hosting, the initial offer is $4.95 a month and $3.85 when you subscribe for 3 years.
Their shared web hosting costs from $2.99 per month for the basic web hosting packages; $3.99 a month for web hosting plus marketing; and $4.99 a month for hosting, marketing, and store.
Their Advanced web hosting packages cost from $15.95 for Essential Web hosting, $23.95 for Professional, and $41.95 for Premium. The promo prices of $2.99 to $36.95 a month are only valid for one month.
VPS hosting costs from $40 per month for Essential hosting and $80 per month for Professional hosting.
Technical support is available for free on Advanced and VPS hosting only, otherwise, you will need to pay for them at about $10 a month for only 30 minutes for the whole month. They are accessible through phone, email, and support ticket methods.
The company does not offer site security together with their packages and you will need to purchase SiteLock security separately. The costs run from $49 to about $400 a year.
Network Solutions was a popular web hosting company before but the quality of their services had seemed to deteriorate over the years. A lot of clients have been dissatisfied with maintaining their uptime as well as access to their sites when they get problems.
I would rate Network Solutions a 6 out of 10 because of the following drawbacks. Their basic package costs a lot but does not have site security as one of its features. You can definitely find other companies offering site security for less than $15 a month. You can be fooled by their initial promo rates but once you get to your cart, you will see that it lacks security, technical support, and mobile support which you have to purchase separately at a very high cost. Technical support is also hard to contact and are not US based so you will definitely encounter some problems in the quality of their representatives.
