DreamHost Web Host Review

DreamHost is one of the largest open-source web hosting companies in the world serving more than 1.5 million sites in the world. It was established in 1997 and has since then grown into one successful company with more than 400, 000 clients in more than 100 countries. It was initially founded by four college students who wished to provide web hosting, domain registration, and cloud services.

As to reliability, DreamHost does deliver excellent results. Their promise of 100% uptime seems to be quite true for some of their clients although some have complained of significant downtime as well. These downtimes however, often had notifications ahead of time. Aside from that, some were also due to the site's heavy content. For scheduled downtimes, most of them lasted only for a few minutes.

DreamHost's packages are packed with features which any site owner would love to have. They offer unlimited disk space, bandwidth, domain hosting, and unlimited email accounts. Their technical support is also available anytime of the day through chat, Twitter, and email. It is also very easy to install apps such as WordPress, Joomla, and Drupal right from their control panel. This control panel is web-based so you can easily access it from any computer where you can create MySQL Databases, manage your bills, and create email addresses. If you are not satisfied with their service, they also offer a 97-day money back guarantee.

DreamHost is definitely not one of the cheapest web hosting companies but their services is also quite better than others. For shared hosting they offer $8.95 per month if you subscribe to them for 2 years, $9.95 a month when you subscribe for 1 year, and $10.95 if you are going to subscribe on a monthly basis. Aside from this, they also offer add-ons to the subscription: $15 a year for an SSL certificate, $5.95 a month for a unique IP address, and $9.95 per month for Premium Support.

They offer WordPress Hosting or DreamPress at $19.95 per month and this includes an automatic WordPress installation, free themes and plugins, free updates, automatic backups, and you also get to enjoy the benefits of a virtual private server.

For a VPS subscription, rates start at $15 a month and its features include unlimited bandwidth, 8 GB RAM, 30-240 GB SSD space, a custom-made control panel, and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. Their dedicated servers costs from $169 per month and includes unlimited bandwidth, 1 TB storage, 16 GB RAM, and a web-based control.

DreamHost offers a 24/7/365 tech support through chat, email, and Twitter. This is definitely one of their unique characteristics since it is quite rare for a web host company to offer assistance through social media. The quality of their support is definitely one of the best but users have also complained about how slow the response can be at times.

If you really want to secure your site, you would have to purchase a separate SSL certificate from DreamHost. Although the company offers an automated malware scan, some subscribers just want to be surer of the security of their sites. But, if your site does not require that much security their automated backups help to ensure that you don't lose your data in case your site gets hacked.

Rating: 9/10

In terms of features, they offer some of the best features for web hosting such as unlimited bandwidth, email accounts and disk space which makes their price really worth it. They are also quite unique with their VPS hosting for their DreamPress package. If you are looking for a fast and efficient technical support though, you would have to pay extra to get Premium Support. This can be a problem if you are a small business and cannot afford all the add-ons. Aside from that, their control panel can also become quite a challenge for beginners. Although they offer one-click app installations, they don't offer tools for one-click site building.

In general, I could give DreamHost 9 out of 10 primarily because of some problems regarding the accessibility of their technical support. In terms of cost, they are not the most affordable in the market and you also do not have access to some of their better services unless you pay extra for them. Uptime is not much of a problem as you can definitely expect an almost perfect uptime for your site. Site upload is also very fast which is a great advantage.
