My Thoughts of "Gay"

Words are like life and culture. They experience many changes through time and one word can have its meaning transformed all in a matter of years just like the way how the theory of evolution works. In the past decade, one of the words that have undergone a rapid change and influence is the word, "Gay". Its meaning had been changed; its usage had been altered and is now mainly used in protest of pride or harassment to something negative.

At first when we look up the word, "Gay" in the dictionary, we should all know its number one definition means "cheerful or bright". This had been really correct since the time the English language started and were only used for that purpose. It had always meant cheerful and bright and lots of songs lyric, poems and even famous novels had used the word with that very same meaning. So why, did it suddenly change?

Homosexuality had always existed in all countries, race, ethnic, in nature, and everywhere else that being a left hander would have existed. It was there since the beginning of age and will always be there until the very end of time. In many history books and culture, being homosexual would usually mean a crime and many bias and hatred would be targeted upon them. Many religions forbid it and so did many people. But however, as time continues to approach and grow, so did the mind of people. By the age of the early 90's, it was the time when homosexuality began to be accepted and people were more comfortable for being who they are. Society's minds begins to opens and rather expect what the pass did, they began to build in with their own thoughts with logic as a pin point.

The first time when the word, "Gay" was used as a word to describe homosexuality was during the beginning of the 90's and was known as "The Gay 90's". Those people accepted that name and it meant well. The origin of the word I guess was because homosexuals finally found happiness in themselves for who they are and being accepted really meant much to them. For this, many began to smile and therefore, people began using the term, "Gay" to describe them. And because this started in the 90's, the full term of, "Gay 90's" was established.

Because an ending of the 90's would be predicted to come to an end, and it did, the term, "Gay 90's" was generally unacceptable. Because the age had moved on, the term, "90's" got removed as it was no longer necessary. So then, how did society reach the fact that the word, "Gay" would be homosexuality and not beauty? Let's find out.

Many popular comedy and cartoons also had its beginning and fame during this time. One of these includes The Simpson’s. It is very wide known that televisions had brought many wrong messages out to the world and stereotype began to rapidly spread. People began to believe what they see in a box and not what reality teaches. More and more audience began addicted and soon, the fate of humanity was based on the screen. Due to many people wanting a good laugh and wanting to see something new, many comedies brought in the word, "Gay" and misused it and spread the meaning of homosexuality.

To be honest, I have to admit people rather accept the negative than the positive. To all the parents, is it easier to teach your children good or bad? To teach a child a good, it takes time but for a bad, it only takes seconds. Because of matter and therefore using, "Gay" as against its natural meaning was a negative aspect; people began picking it up and giving it to other. Slowly, homophobias took the definition and used it in many expression of hatred. Some of these may include calling something they think ugly to be, gay. Then as time continues to move on, though it was only a few years, the term "Gay" finally meant "homosexuality".

Many researches may also agree with me that people are getting dumber as they rely on technology for everything they do. For a student to do an assignment these day, spending hours in a library was a thing of the pass, they would just hop onto the Internet, type in a few keywords, copy, paste, change a few sentence. Done. Takes only a few hours. So because of this fact in our minds now, the term, "gay" also had its own little natural change like the Earth revolving around the sun. Disasters may strike and the weather can also be a bit out of control. Another example are myths. Through many words being circulated and mouths changing a bit and adding it to the plot, stories of make believe begins to form. This is really how the term, "Gay" experienced.

"Your website is so gay and it sucks!" is a sentence we may have all heard. To the scholars, how on earth is it possible for a website to be homosexual? Making this statement can sometimes even make me laugh. And to continue, the sentence ends with "and it sucks" which points out the sense was mean to bring a negative impact, so in other word if the author of the sentence wants to fake they didn't meant to be rude, they were obviously not saying, "Your website is so bright and it sucks!" No. that's not what it meant. It's more to, "Your website is so bad and it sucks!" is more understandable and logical. So back to my point of people getting dumber, don't you have to agree the person that made that harassment is pretty moronic? I mean, how can you start positive then ends negative in the SAME sentence? It's just not possible, even for an English teacher. With this in mind, this can clearly show people are getting dumber and don't think before they act.

Now you may now be wondering what my point in writing this article is. Really, I just want to change society's view of the word, "Gay" by just adding my two cents into it. I know this won't make any difference as it's just one small article, but I know it will affect someone out there. So if you agree with my words and want to help, what can you do? Next time when you experience something bad or want to express your feeling in a biased feeling, instead of saying "That's so gay!" say "That's so horrible" instead. Though it's just you, your speech can really make a difference. But through my eyes I know the meaning won't be able to revert. I think by us playing our parts and try to change society, we can make it better! Are you with me?

So next time you see a negative aspect, instead of saying "That's so gay!" and smashing the true definition of a term and showing others how dumb you really are, say something else. But please do not get me wrong. Do not go and start saying, "That's so straight!” That won't work and it's just another move of creating negative impact.

The word, "Gay" is a wonderful word. Short, easy to remember and also a male's name, how can anyone dare to see it change to something less beautiful? Every word is a pleasure, and that's why I wrote this article to try to keep it that way! Thank you for reading!
